No worries! Below you will find steps to get you started on have Daily Divine Dates. These are the basic steps. As you continue to consistently have divine dates you will be prompted by the Holy Spirit to move, shift, add and/or delete some things. The steps below are just guide to get you started. They are not the gospel. Let the Holy Spirit move and shape the atmosphere.
Divine Date Guidance – not Gospel!
- Pick a quiet/secluded place to have your divine dates. I have always liked the idea of a prayer closet so that is where you will find me. If your closet won’t do, perhaps a spot in your bedroom, the kitchen table, the sunroom, or even the bathroom will suffice. As long as it is quiet and you can be alone it will work.
- Pick a time of day. I prefer mornings but it should ideally coincide with the start of your day. If you work the night shift your time may be 8pm. Whenever you can find that time to slip away to that quite, secluded spot you chose in step 1 will do. The time of day should also be consistent at much as possible.
- Gather the necessities – bible, journal, pen. Those are the minimum requirements. Anything else you choose to bring into your space should be decided based on need and discipline level. Don’t bring your cellphone into this space if you won’t be able to keep from scrolling Facebook or checking emails.
- Set the stage! Don’t wait to the last minute to place your necessities in your spot. You wouldn’t wait until it was time for your date to take a shower. Prepare beforehand for your time with the Divine.
- Plan your date ahead of time. Again, you wouldn’t wait until your date came to pick you up to decide what activity you were going to engage in. You would want to know before the date what you were going to to do so you could figure out how to dress and what to expect. The same is true here. Know what scriptures you plan to focus on or what devotional you want to read. Plan your itinerary. For example, are you going to read scripture, pray, then listen to music or listen to music, read scripture, then pray. Before you ask, no you don’t have to always be so rigid, as you get more comfortable and accustomed to having divine dates you can be a more spontaneous!
- Build up your time. If you are new to this don’t try to have an hour long divine date. Start off with 10 minutes and work your way up. Before you know it, you will be wondering how an hour flew by so fast!
- Just do it! Don’t make excuses. If you are reading this blog, God is calling you to be His date. Don’t stand Him up. He has so many wonderful things to share with you. Don’t keep Him waiting any longer. It’s time for your date with the Divine!
